The Union of Agricultural Workers of Korea [UAWK] commemorated its 70th anniversary with a meeting and concert at the People’s Palace of Culture in Pyongyang on January 31 (Sunday).
The meeting and concert were attended by Yang Hyong Sop (Vice President of the Supreme People’s Assembly [SPA] Presidium), Kwak Pom Gi (Workers’ Party of Korea [WPK] Secretary and Director of the WPK Planning and Finance Department), Ri Chol Man (DPRK Vice Premier and Minister of Agriculture), Ri Il Hwan (Director of the WPK Workers’ and Social Organizations Department), Ri Myong Gil (Chairman of the UAWK Central Committee), UAWK functionaries and officials and DPRK agricultural workers.
Kwak Pom Gi read a message from the WPK Central Committee and, according to KCNA, said “that the union has developed into a mass political organization and successfully fulfilled its mission and duty under the wise guidance and meticulous care of peerlessly great persons of Mt. Paektu for the past seven decades.” The message also said that “the organizations at all levels and officials and members of the union have made great achievement in the drive to develop it into militant ranks remaining faithful to the party and the leader and carry out the party’s policy of agriculture.”
A concert marking the UAWK’s anniversary was also held. It began with a choir singing “Ode to General Kim Jong Un (Kim Cho’ng-u’n)” and included spoken word performance “Peerlessly Great Persons of Mt. Paektu and Union of Agricultural Workers” and “numbers showing a fresh history of changes which is being made in building modern socialist rural villags under the guidance of Marshal Kim Jong Un According to KCNA, the performers “sang in high praises of the exploits performed by President Kim Il Sung (Kim Il-so’ng) and leader Kim Jong Il (Kim Cho’ng-il) who realized the long-cherished desire of the Korean farmers and set a brilliant example in socialist rural construction.”
On January 28 (Thursday), the UAWK held a seminar to commemorate its anniversary, also at the People’s Palace of Culture. Seminar participants heard ideological and policy papers “dealing with ways of adding shine to the exploits performed by the peerlessly great persons of Mt. Paektu in founding the union and developing it and bringing about a fresh turn in its work under the So’ngun (military-first) leadership of Marshal Kim Jong Un.” UAWK Central Committee Chairman Ri Myo’ng-kil and other seminar speakers said that the UAWK “whose origin was given in the flames of the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle has successfully fulfilled its mission and duty on behalf of the era and revolution since its founding. The road covered by the union is associated with the tireless efforts of the peerlessly great persons of Mt. Paekty who wisely led its work, attaching great importance to its development and role of the agricultural workers.”
