Research and Analysis on the DPRK Leadership

General Jong Ho Gyun

updated February 25, 2018

General Jong Ho Gyun is a former commander in the Korean People’s Army, and former head of the Artillery Corps.  He is a third generation KPA leader, and former member of the Party Central Committee (CC KWP) and the Central Military Commission.

Jong Ho Gyun was elected to candidate membership on the Party Central Committee at its 10th plenum (6th Term/6th CC) in December 1984.  He was promoted to Lieutenant General and elected a deputy to the 8th Supreme People’s Assembly in 1986.  In the 1980s Jong was division commander.

Jong was promoted Colonel General in April 1992.  He was assigned command of IX Army Corps in North Hamgyong in the early 1990s.  In 1997 he was assigned command of the 620th Artillery Corps.

Jong was promoted to General in April 2010, on the occasion of the Day of the Sun.  It is believed in the ROK that General Jong replaced Artillery Corps Commander Ri Jong Bu who passed away in 2010.  Jong was elected to full membership on the WPK Central Committee during the 3rd Party Conference on September 28, 2010.

Jong was possibly dismissed from office around 2012.
