Workers and Social Organizations Hold Meetings (updated)

The Union of Agricultural Workers of Korea [UAWK] held a plenary meeting of its central committee on February 1 (Monday).  Attending the meeting were UAWK Central Committee members and alternate (candidate) members and various UAWK officials.  The meeting discusses implementing agricultural-related “tasks” in Kim Jong Un’s New Year’s Address.

UAWK Central Committee Chairman Ri Myo’ng-kil and other speakers “called upon the members of the union to redouble efforts in the sense of responsibility that they are standing on the first line trench of the first echelon in defending socialism” and said that “organizations of the UAWK should launch an intensive emulation at the model farms in the So’ngun (military-first) era, grain production, stock-breeding, greenhouse vegetable, mushroom production and other fields so that signal successes may be achieved on the agricultural front.”  They also “called for glorifying this significant year to see the 7th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea with increased production of grain.”

The General Federation of Trade Unions of Korea [GFTUK] met in Pyongyang on January 28 (Thursday) for a plenary meeting of its central committee.  Attending the meeting were GFTUK Central Committee members and alternate (candidate) members and trade union functionaries officials from Pyongyang and the provinces.

GFTUK Central Committee Chairman Ju Yong Gil delivered a report which was followed by other speakers.  According to KCNA, the rpoert and speeches “underscored the need to conduct the organizational and political work to bring about greater miracles and innovations at work sites for a great surge, holding high the Party’s militant slogan ‘Let us usher in a golden age in building a thriving nation in this year when the Seventh Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea [WPK] is to be held!” and “called upon organizations and officials of the trade unions to boldly set goals of their units and arouse the members to the drive for hitting them and thus make positive contributions to glorifying the 7th Congress of the WPK as the congress of victors and glory.”

On January 27 (Wednesday), the Korean Democratic Women’s Union [KDWU] held a plenary meeting of its central committee in Pyongyang. Attending the meeting were KDWU central committee members and alternate (candidate) members and various KDWU officials.  The meeting “discussed the issue of thoroughly implementing the tasks set forth by Marshal Kim Jong Un (Kim Cho’ng-u’n) in his New Year’s Address for 2016.”

Kim Jong Sun, KDWU Central Committee Chairwoman, delivered a report which was followed by other speakers.  According to KCNA, the report and speeches said that “the historic New Year’s Address of the Marshal serves as a militant banner as it clearly indicates the tasks for this year and ways for glorifying the 7th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea as a congress of victors and honor and ushering in the greatest heyday of building a thriving nation” and they “called upon all the officials and members of the women’s union to devotedly implement the important tasks set forth by the Marshal in his New Year’s Address and bring about a dramatic turn in the work of the women’s union and thus make positive contributions to brilliantly adorning this year when the 7th Congress of the WPK is to be held.”

On January 27 (Wednesday), the General Federation of Science and Technology Korea [GFSTK] held an enlarged plenary meeting of its central committee at the People’s Palace of Culture.  Attending the meeting were Workers’ Party of Korea [WPK] Secretary for Science and Education and Supreme People’s Assembly [SPA] Chairman Choe T’ae Bok, along with GFSTK Central Committee members and alternate (candidate) members, GFSTK officials and various officials of science and technology professional associations and societies.

According to KCNA the plenary meeting “discussed the tasks of the committees of all levels, associations and societies to carry out without fail the tasks set forth by Kim Jong Un (Kim Cho’ng-u’n) in his New Year’s Address.”  Kye Hui Nam, Vice Chairman of the GFSTK Central Committee delivered a report which was followed by other speakers.  According to KCNA the report and speeches “proposed the tasks and ways to bring about a fresh turn in developing the national economy and improving the people’s standard of living by dint of science and technology true to the intention of Kim Jong Un” and “called for making signal achievements in the science and technology activities and research this year and thus make positive contributions to glorifying the Seventh Congress of the WPK as of victors and honor.”
